Peoria begins negotiations to buy water company

After a lengthy presentation by staff at an Oct. 21 study session, city council directed the public works department to begin the possible purchase of New River Water Utility.

NRWU has the water franchise area north of Union Hills Drive at 83rd Avenue, an area that covers 1.75 square miles. A majority of the area is the Fletcher Heights development.

City Manager Carl Swenson said the utility company owner approached the city “some time ago” about the possibility of the city purchasing the company. At that time, council directed staff to contact users and ask how they felt about switching to city water service.
