Scottsdale-based Rural/Metro Corp., which is healing from a Chapter 11 reorganization, is against a competitor coming into the Phoenix region’s ambulance market.
While Arizona hospitals no longer are required to show the state that there is a need before expanding into a market, ambulance companies still must prove there is a need before they are issued a Certificate of Necessity, or CON, by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
American Medical Response Inc. is trying to enter the Maricopa County ambulance market, but Rural/Metro is doing its best to keep the competitor out of the Valley. AMR is part of Greenwood Village, Colorado-based Envision Healthcare Corp. (NYSE: EVHC)
Glenn Kasprzyk, COO for AMR, said his company also has applied for a CON in Pima County.
