Tempe residents who fear that high density will translate into towering growth and traffic that is out of step with a neighborhood’s desire to protect character and home values soon might have greater protections.
A proposal before the Tempe City Council would make it tougher for the council to give developers waivers to build projects that fall outside voter-approved General Plan restrictions.
The proposal originated with Councilman Kolby Granville, who with Councilwoman Shana Ellis and Councilman Corey Woods brought it to the full council.
The intention is to place greater emphasis on the General Plan. The updated plan was approved by voters in May.
