Just two months ago, Arizona Democrats brimmed with optimism.
At the top of the ticket, they had experienced and recognizable candidates who had avoided primary challenges, saving money and ammunition for the general election. Polling showed them close to or with leads over their GOP rivals, who had just survived bruising primary campaigns for the statewide office.
“This is our year,” Bill Scheel, campaign manager for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Fred DuVal, said soon after the primary.
No one in the party is saying that now.
