Binsbacher, Toma headed to runoff in Peoria council race

Two Peoria candidates who have been embroiled in a contentious council race will head to a runoff in March after neither grabbed enough votes to win outright Tuesday night.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Bridget Binsbacher had 47.5 percent of the votes in the Mesquite District while Ben Toma had 37.3 percent and Ken Krieger trailed them at 15.1 percent. A candidate must receive 50 percent plus one of the ballots cast to win outright.

Tuesday’s election was actually a primary because a federal judge canceled the August primary after Krieger’s name twice was left off early ballots. The runoff will be March 10.
