The Interstate Stream Commission voted Monday morning to divert the Gila River, ending eight long years of contentious debate on the issue.
The decision came as no surprise to most people who attended the ISC meeting in Silver City Nov. 14. At that meeting, the ISC staff recommended a diversion project, and that only a little more than $7 million be spent on conservation projects, out of a possible $66 million set aside under the Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) for conservation proposals.
