Sell your house on your own? Think twice

Hire a real-estate agent? List the property ourselves? Some homeowners who are ready to sell debate the issue.

For-sale-by-owner listings, known as FSBOs, are believed by some to be the cheapest way to sell a house. But new research on metro Phoenix home sales from the Information Market shows houses sold by real-estate agents bring in higher prices.

Analyst Tom Ruff of the Information Market computed the difference in prices by comparing public records on sales with home sales listed on the Arizona Regional Multiple Listing Service during the first nine months of this year. Only licensed real-estate agents and members of ARMLS can list houses with the state’s biggest multiple listing service.
