Casa Grande Dispatch

When Congress approved the annual defense funding bill this month, it approved a land exchange to allow development of a Superior copper mine that will have a huge impact on Pinal County. The exchange has been years in the making but has enjoyed bipartisan support from Reps. Paul Gosar and Ann Kirkpatrick, who formerly were political opponents in the 1st Congressional District. The project also has been supported by Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake.

Besides creating jobs in a depressed area of the county with a tradition in mining, the project will mean a major boost to the county’s tax base as it faces a continuing budget challenge. The exchange also will mean preservation of environmentally sensitive land. The Resolution Copper approval is a win-win proposition.
