On the day the Diamondbacks officially signed Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, rumors swirled through the Manchester Grand Hyatt about the potential trade availability of veterans Miguel Montero and Mark Trumbo.

Those rumors, however, were subject to debate and fraught with confusion.

Were the Diamondbacks actually willing to trade Trumbo, the slugging outfielder who logically seems expendable due to Tomas’ presence? Executives with other teams — including one club that was certain to be interested in him — said they’ve received mixed signals from the Diamondbacks, who continue to tell reporters they’re not interested in dealing him.
