Salt River Project (SRP) provides electric services to the San Tan Valley community. As you drive througout the community, you see more and more homes taking advantage of Arizona’s year round sunshine by adding solar panels to their homes. While the incentives previously offered by SRP to encourage residents to invest in solar have gone away, the number of people using solar has increased more than three times over the last year. A new rate-hike plan however, has many concerned that there will be no more solar industry in SRP’s service territory if the $50 or more a month in new fees for new solar customers is approved. The current SRP rate-increase is similar to one Arizona Public Service Co (APS) proposed last year. APS however needed regulatory approval for the rate increase and the proposed $50-$100 per month fee per rooftop-solar customer was reduced to $5 per month. SRP however is a municipal utility, which means they are not subject to regulatory approval before putting additional fees in place.
