Central Arizona College President Doris Helmich says if President Barack Obama’s plan to offer free tuition to community college students becomes a reality, it could be a boon to Pinal County.

Helmich points to a recent study conducted by the college that showed the economic impact the school has on the county and showed that residents with a college education — either an associate or a bachelor’s degree — have higher-paying jobs and contribute more to the local economy.

“I believe Obama is trying to inflate the economy to grow and this is one way to do it,” Helmich said. “Because when you have educated people, they make more money and they pay more taxes and he’s trying to increase the revenue.”
