The Glendale City Council is reaffirming its support for a casino resort now under construction by the Tohono O’odham Nation on tribal land near Glendale in an effort by the project’s backers to bolster their fight against the latest federal legislation aimed at stopping the project – the West Valley’s first.

The governing body voted 6-1 during its workshop Tuesday to approve a resolution expressing continued backing for Resolution 4828. The measure, passed by the panel July 15, 2014, repealed an earlier resolution opposing the $400 million project and put the council squarely behind the casino. It also expressed the city’s endorsement of a July 3, 2014, Interior Department decision to place 53.54 acres of unincorporated Maricopa County land in trust for the Nation, which allowed the tribe to pursue its casino resort plan.

Councilman Gary Sherwood said Tohono O’odham officials are scheduled to visit Congress this week to lobby on behalf of the project and the latest city resolution would bolster their cause.
