The changing of the guard in city council chambers this week did not necessarily mean a shift in goals for the governing body.
New Mayor Cathy Carlat, who was sworn in Tuesday night, succeeding two-term mayor Bob Barrett, indicated she will pursue some of the same general goals as her predecessor while carving out her own niche in helping shape the city’s future.
“Economic development is going to be priority number one,” Carlat said in an interview prior to taking office. “Ninety percent of our work force now drives out of city to go to work. That’s not a sustainable way to have a complete city. It’s time to change the trajectory of the city. That means true employment.”
