Republican Gov. Doug Ducey outlined his economic and education priorities Monday in a speech that meandered between big-picture ideas and small-potato items.
So, what does his first State of the State address really mean for Arizona? Members of The Republic’s editorial board break it down:
Governor Ducey’s private-sector naivete seemed to be on display Monday as he outlined plans in his first State of the State speech
Instituting a state-government hiring freeze and ordering agency heads to review regulatory schemes has been done before
We look forward to the real tell-all document: the governor’s budget, which will arrive in a few days
Our View: Arizona’s new governor seems to be relying on a lot of money-saving sleuths to move the state forward.
Gov. Doug Ducey’s great appeal as a candidate was his devotion to the sort of free-market principles that might help unleash the faltering “animal spirits” of Arizona’s economy. Right mindset. Right square-jawed determination. Right time.
That’s what we saw during the campaign and, in many respects, in Ducey’s first State of the State address on Monday.
