Bill would redefine ‘political committee’

The legal wilderness that Arizona’s campaign finance regulations have encountered since a federal judge struck down a key statute last year may soon come to an end.

A bill written by the Secretary of State’s Office would amend and clarify Arizona’s statutory definition of “political committee” to comply with U.S. District Court Judge James Teilborg’s ruling that the old definition was unconstitutional.

Rep. Michelle Ugenti, R-Scottsdale, introduced HB2649, a drastic overhaul of a key statute upon which many of Arizona’s campaign finance laws rely. Ugenti chairs the House Elections Committee.
