Executives of Arizona’s second biggest utility have for years spent millions on an education perk that has paid for their children to attend some of the nation’s top tier schools.
Records show 77 executives spent $2.6 million in tuition assistance between 2009 and 2014 to send their children to community colleges and state and private universities around the country.
Executives, including SRP’s general manager, vice president and lobbyists, have received as much as $100,000 in tuition assistance in the past five years.
SRP officials defend the program, saying tuition assistance helps the utility remain competitive in the job market and maintain low utility rates.
Salt River Project officials are calling for a rate increase this month, saying existing revenues are not sufficient to pay for coal and gas plants and other investments needed on the power grid.
