For Lent: Church property tax cut bill sent to governor

A state bill cutting property taxes for churches that lease space in commercial buildings has been sent to Gov. Doug Ducey.

Previous versions of the current House Bill 2128 were vetoed by former Gov. Jan Brewer.

The new measure would cut property taxes for space leased by churches and other religious institutions down to 1 percent. Churches that own their own buildings are exempt from state property taxes.

Right now, commercial space leased by storefront churches and religious groups pay an 18.5 percent state property tax rates. That is the same paid by most businesses. Charter schools leasing commercial space also pay the 1 percent rate.
