Glendale usually loses jobs each January, following the annual holiday shopping season, but the 6,785 positions that vanished for local residents a couple months ago was the second-highest decline in the past 20 years.
From December 2014 to January 2015, the number of Glendale residents with jobs fell from 114,599 to 107,814, according to preliminary figures the Bureau of Labor Statistics released March 20.
In the past two decades, the only other period when post-holiday layoffs exceeded that figure was when 7,525 city residents lost their jobs from December 2009 to January 2010, as Glendale was struggling from the Great Recession.
