New group registers to push for legalized marijuana in Arizona

A new effort has emerged to legalize recreational marijuana in Arizona, creating a fracture in the campaign to put the issue to a public vote in 2016.

Arizonans for Responsible Legalization registered as a political committee with the Secretary of State’s office this afternoon. The new committee will operate independently of the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington, D.C.-based group that backed the 2010 voter initiative that legalized medical marijuana in Arizona and has been drafting legislation in anticipation of filing an initiative in Arizona to legalize recreational marijuana.

The Marijuana Policy Project has been involved in initiatives that crafted medical marijuana programs in several states, as well as full legalization in Washington and Colorado.
