Court justices fired tough questions at both sides Monday in a lawsuit that challenges the authority of Arizona’s Independent Redistricting Commission and could lead to a dramatic redrawing of congressional lines.
“It was a very active court today. Questioning on both sides was very intense,” said redistricting commission attorney Mary O’Grady on the courthouse steps after the argument.
The nine justices hardly allowed the argument to begin before interrupting with rapid-fire questions. Arizona Legislature attorney Paul Clement was stopped mid-sentence during his opening remarks by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg asking for a clarification.
