Glendale says blocking casino opening would hurt the city

Glendale is urging the state gaming director to back off his opposition to a West Valley casino and work with the Tohono O’odham Nation to open the gaming hall later this year.

Arizona Department of Gaming Director Daniel Bergin told the tribe April 10 that the state will not allow the casino to open in December as planned. He alleged the tribe committed fraud by not disclosing its West Valley casino plan during compact negotiations in 2002.

Michael Bailey, Glendale city attorney, said in a letter sent Thursday to Bergin that the director’s casino position threatens about 1,300 construction jobs, thousands of permanent positions and an annual economic boost of $300 million.
