City officials are advancing creation of a special corridor along Loop 101 in north Glendale that would, among other things, prohibit billboards near the freeway in that area.
Although the plan would not address a section of land off Bell Road currently eyed by a Phoenix billboard company, it would prohibit the structures along other portions of Loop 101.
The “scenic corridor” being discussed would cover an area on both sides of the freeway from 51st Avenue west to a site yet to be determined, according to city Planning Director Jon Froke.
“The purpose and benefit to Glendale would be to protect view corridors and preserve natural areas, washes, desert, hills or mountains. It would prohibit off-premise signs from being located on portions of the Loop 101,” the planning director said.
