A recent analysis from Pew Charitable Trusts’ Stateline blog reports the middle class shrunk in every U.S. state in between the years of 2000 and 2013.
In the analysis, Pew defined middle class households as those earning 67%-200% of a state’s median income.
The analysis found Arizona in the middle of the pack of how much people in need to earn to be considered “middle class.” Arizonans need to earn at least $32,340 to be considered middle class. according to Business Insider research based on Pew and U.S. Census data
“Middle class” is a tricky concept. Depending on where you live, you can feel middle class earning as much as $250,000 a year — about five times the U.S. median income of $52,250 from the same time period.
Arizona’s median is $48,510. Mississippi sits at the bottom with $37,963.
