A trailer across the bottom of the screen on ESPN tells us Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Hold the phone, voters.
One of the reasons coaches such as Duke’s Mike Krzyewski is so respected is because his mentoring goes beyond Xs and Os; he and other many other coaches teach life lessons, such as respect, humility and sportsmanship.
All season long as his Wildcats continued to pile up 38 straight wins, Calipari professed he was keeping his players—led by the Harrison twins—humble, and his young team members were more mature than their ages.
I don’t buy it. I can see locker room speeches during which Calipari, who has recruiting violations on his resume, tells his players they are the best in the nation and can’t be beaten.
Just what a 19-year-old wants to hear.
Kentucky will not be in the Championship tonight with Duke versus Wisconsin because they lost to Wisconsin and in doing so showed what kind of sportsmanship Calipari bred in them.
Andrew Harrison, his brother and other teammates walked off the floor without shaking hands with Wisconsin players.
In the post-game interview, Andrew was asked about Wisconsin star Frank Kaminsky. F**** that n****, he said under his breath.
He apologized later in a tweet, but it didn’t admit, “I’m a coddled kid and a poor loser.”
I’m more looking for an apology from Coach Calipari.
We won’t hear any slurs from tonight’s loser as we did Saturday night, remarks subtedly allowed by a miserable coach of feckless youth.
The moral of all this is collegiate sports is too big for its britches.
