Legislature could set modern record by leaving town tonight

State legislative leaders are rushing to end this year’s session by Thursday night, a move that could leave high-profile bills on the cutting-room floor.

Senate President Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert, and House Speaker David Gowan, R-Sierra Vista, met Tuesday evening and decided to march toward adjournment before the Easter weekend starts Friday. If the Legislature adjourns sine die — meaning “without a day” — it would be the earliest in modern legislative history.

The decision comes as dozens of bills await action, as well confirmation votes on several key agency appointments by Gov. Doug Ducey.
