Prescott considers raising taxes to pay for pensions

Taxes will be on the minds of members of the city council at this week’s meeting.

Funding measures for two issues, open space and firefighter and police officer pensions, will go to a vote, which will determine whether they’ll appear on an August ballot, and both will ask voters to approve a sales tax hike.

The more pressing issue is the contribution required by the state’s Public Safety Personnel Retirement System.

PSPRS pays for firefighter and police officers’ retirement benefits, but the amounts due from employers like the City of Prescott have risen substantially in the last few years.
