Johnson Utilities claimed heavy losses earlier this year, stemming from alleged comments that the town of Florence still had dibs on buying the company.
“Some officials claiming to speak for the town are wrongly contending that there is a right of first refusal in place in favor of the town concerning any sale of Johnson Utilities. Any such contention is mistaken,” according to a Feb. 13 letter from a Johnson attorney to the town clerk.
The letter concludes with a notice of claim, typically a prelude to a lawsuit, for $225 million.
However, two months later, the issue was settled by the Town Council making clear the town has no rights of first refusal.
