Glendale leaders see no shift in casino project with voters’ ouster of tribal chairman

A change in leadership of the tribe building a West Valley casino most likely indicates no shift in the project’s future, city leaders on both sides of the issue say.

Results from Saturday’s election for chairman of the Tohono O’odham Nation certified by the Nation’s elections board confirm the unseating of two-term term Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. by former chairman Edward D. Manuel, who received 1,838 votes to Norris’ 1,625 – a 213-vote margin. The total number of votes cast in the race – 3,463 – represents 35 percent of the Nation’s 9,875 eligible voters.
