SRP agrees to $13M deal to shut coal plant

Salt River Project officials on Thursday approved the $10 million purchase of the Los Angeles share of the embattled Navajo Generating Station coal-fired power plant in northern Arizona.

The purchase will help facilitate the eventual closure of one of the three generators at the plant to comply with Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

SRP also will spend about $2.88 million on the deal to prepay for coal expenses related to the plant, and transfer to LADWP its property and transmission assets associated with the closed Mohave Generating Station.
