Phoenix moved one step closer to its renewable energy goal with Wednesday’s dedication of the Desert Star Solar Plant in Buckeye.
The project, located on 118 acres at the State Route 85 Landfill, will help Phoenix reach its target of using renewable energy for 15 percent of its power needs by 2025.
The plant will be fully operational by September and will push the city’s percentage of renewable energy to more than 6 percent by the end of 2015.
“We have a renewable energy standard in Arizona of 15 percent by 2025 — that’s an aggressive standard by most measures,” said Doug Little, Arizona Corporation Commission member. “It’s projects like these that provide the efficiencies and the economies of scale that make renewable energy affordable to all ratepayers.”
