A new jail will replace the county’s Durango jail, which opened in 1976 and has housed between 1,700 and 2,200 inmates.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is scheduled to build the $190 million jail near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
The project creates construction and engineering contract opportunities for a number of business and vendors.
The county has six jail facilities.
