Chandler is considering a change that would waive the usual requirements imposed on businesses looking to occupy small, older buildings.
The proposed changes would include less-restrictive fire-sprinkler rules and easing the city requirement that a business provide a minimal amount of parking spaces, among other things.
The idea, according to city economic-development officials, is to encourage investment in commercial buildings of about 5,000 square feet or less that dot older areas of the city, primarily along Arizona Avenue north of the downtown area. Many such buildings are either vacant or could be put to better use if new investment is encouraged, city officials say. Most are retail buildings.
