Early opening this summer for Mesa light rail [VIDEO]

By Maria Polletta | The Republic | azcentral.comLight rail will arrive in downtown Mesa on Aug. 22, officially putting an end to three years of construction cycles marked by traffic detours, parking dilemmas and dust.Mesa leaders announced the revised opening date for the 3.1-mile Central Mesa extension Wednesday, as a raucous crowd of transportation officials, residents and business owners cheered the accelerated timeline.When construction began on the extension — which will take the train from Sycamore to Mesa Drive along Main Street, adding four stations and a park-and-ride — officials expected operations wouldn’t begin until March 2016. Last year, they revised their estimate to fall 2015 despite construction moratoriums during peak tourism months.Continued:
