Developer George Johnson is permitted to fence more than 1,000 acres of the future Johnson Ranch Estates with barbed wire.

The Florence Town Council members, sitting as the town’s Board of Adjustments, approved a variance Monday to permit barbed wire on portions of the property east of Arizona 79 and north and south of Florence-Kelvin Highway.

The town had previously heard from a citizen that barbed wire fencing was going up before WLB Group Inc., on behalf of Johnson Ranch Estates LLC, requested the variance.
