Maricopa hopes to transform old town

The city wants to eventually shine a bright light on the Heritage District and show it off for all to see.

But in its current state, the centrally located historic part of town is more of a threat to public safety than it is a jewel in the city’s crown.

At a City Council meeting in April, Police Chief Steve Stahl pointed out some harsh realities about the Heritage District — specifically one area of the district he said poses the most problems. He did so because he was trying to show the council why it needed to apply for grant funding that could help clean up the neighborhood.

The issues in the Heritage District run the gamut — drug activity, domestic violence, child endangerment, property damage and building code violations are just some of the problems.
