Maricopa to end handouts to nonprofits

When the Maricopa City Council began its nonprofit funding program for local entities back in 2011, it allotted a total of $300,000. But council members said they simply can’t afford to hand out anything for the time being.

Heading into the budget process for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the council mandated each individual nonprofit could apply for a maximum of $25,000.

With continuing concerns about costs that have been shifted to cities and counties due to budget cuts by the state Legislature, the council voted May 5 to suspend its nonprofit funding program indefinitely.
