Sports Drafts: Why do we celebrate pouring money down the rat hole?

Image this scene: In a televised event, an announcement is made by the company owner it has hired James Wilson from the University of Arizona as its first choice to join the firm and at a very high salary. Wilson hugs the CEO and tips a U of A cap to the cameras as his parents and other family members hug and jump up and down.

Wilson’s chances of staying with the company long enough to get a gold watch are slim.

Such hiring extravaganzas are left to professional basketball and football, where twice a year sports TV make the NFL and NBA drafts into the Academy Awards.

Fans go bananas, both in favor and against the draft choices.

The bling worn by these new millionaire kids must weigh 400 pounds. The fashions worn are loud enough to cause viewers to click the mute button on the remote control.

A politician is told never to put anything on his head for fear of looking like a doophus. Well, the team caps these new millionaire kids wear from their new employers are getting so big they resemble a duck-billed platypus.

And way too many man-hugs among men who have never met.

The NFL commish must have to visit a chiropractor after hugs from dozen of 300-pound no-necks. The NBA boss has to hug draftees with his nose in their belly buttons.

In the end, a small percentage of these draftees make the grade in the pros, yet team owners will continue to pour money down the rat hole.

Free agency is a much better bet.
