Arizona postpones bidding for more private prisons

The Arizona Department of Corrections has postponed by two months the application deadline for bidders to run a new private prison, citing the need to focus on recent riots at a private prison near Kingman.

The deadline was extended to Sept. 22.

The state wants to outsource 1,000 more medium-security beds this fiscal year. The DOC also wants another 1,000 beds next year, pending legislative approval, because of overcrowding in state facilities.
