The Gilbert Town Council voted Thursday to move forward with a multimillion-dollar veterans park across the street from Town Hall.
The Welcome Home Veterans Park will sprawl across 7.7 acres adjacent to the Gilbert Police and Fire Department on Civic Center Drive. The anchor of the park will be an 80 percent-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
The lease and agreement approved Thursday creates a formal partnership between Gilbert and Operation Welcome Home AZ, a local veterans non-profit. Under the agreement, Operation Welcome Home will take on the majority of the financial responsibility.
