A stretch of Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix is the city’s newest “complete street” after 10 years of planning and more than $2.5 million in investment.
The road was retrofitted with a focus on pedestrians and cyclists through a project that started construction in June 2014 and ended earlier this month. Organizations in the arts district — a dense collection of galleries and restaurants that regularly host outdoor events — advocated for the changes starting in 2005.
Roosevelt street between Central Avenue and Fourth Street is now among the first so-called complete streets corridors Phoenix has finished since the City Council approved design standards last year. The concept promotes constructing and retrofitting streets for the comfort of all users, not just cars.
