The Pinal County Board of Supervisors exercised its leverage over Sheriff Paul Babeu by denying his request to create a new position within his department, even though funding for it would come from a state task force.
Babeu came to the board Wednesday asking for a crime analyst, a position that doesn’t exist at the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. With a 3-2 vote, the board denied his request, saying his refusal to cooperate in a third-party staffing study of his department was the reason.
Supervisors Anthony Smith, R-Maricopa, and Todd House, R-Apache Junction, voted to approve the sheriff’s request.
