Supervisors slap Babeu with staffing denial for his refusal to take part in study

The Pinal County Board of Supervisors exercised its leverage over Sheriff Paul Babeu by denying his request to create a new position within his department, even though funding for it would come from a state task force.

Babeu came to the board Wednesday asking for a crime analyst, a position that doesn’t exist at the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. With a 3-2 vote, the board denied his request, saying his refusal to cooperate in a third-party staffing study of his department was the reason.

Supervisors Anthony Smith, R-Maricopa, and Todd House, R-Apache Junction, voted to approve the sheriff’s request.
