The city of Tempe says it owns the land. The squatter says his family has lived there for 120 years.

On Friday, the two sides squared off in court

The city asked a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to toss a lawsuit filed by Steve Sussex. He claims he should have title to the junk-ridden property near downtown.

Lawyers for Tempe say the increasingly valuable land, a short distance from Tempe Town Lake, rightfully belongs to the city. And that Sussex family, despite claiming to have lived on the land since 1894, has no right to the property.
