Industry grappling with old strip malls, empty offices to reuse

The Great Recession left in its wake a slew of big-box store spaces, vacant movie theaters and deserted strip malls.

Many are still vacant, but commercial real estate officials at a roundtable held Aug. 25 by the Phoenix Business Journal said while there’s a lot of vacant space, other users are seeking those buildings, such as charter schools, churches and gyms.

Adaptive reuse in the Valley has turned warehouses into new R&R Partners offices and a future WebPT tech office. Restaurants also are adapting many older buildings, led by Upward Projects and Fox Restaurant Concepts.
