Pastor says he was ‘blindsided’ by Christian-only change made to his prayer plan by city council

The pastor who initiated a resolution to bring prayer back to Coolidge City Council meetings isn’t happy officials added a “Christian-only” stipulation to the proposal this week.

Byron Sanders, the pastor at Fairhaven Baptist Church and the city’s public safety chaplain, said Wednesday he was “blindsided” when the council voted Monday to bring back invocations at the beginning of its meetings with the stipulation that those prayers only come from Christian ministers.

“I was blindsided by the whole thing, really,” Sanders said. “I wanted this to get involvement from the community, to have the churches in the community be represented.”
