Supervisor Chase’s former assistant challenges her in board election

A former assistant to Pinal County Supervisor Cheryl Chase, who was fired by her and placed on a “do-not-hire” list, is now seeking to challenge her for her elected position next fall.

Manuel Vega was fired by Chase in January 2014, with his termination coming after an investigation into claims he made against other county employees, including former County Manager Fritz Behring, came back as baseless.

Vega said shortly after his firing that the investigation was a “hack job” and that his firing by Chase surprised him. In the days after his firing, he bad-mouthed his former boss, saying in a letter to the Board of Supervisors she had spent taxpayer dollars on frivolous items, including personalized coffee mugs and lapel pins.
