When Deputy Andrew Wikstrom, head bowed and muttering expletives, heard the judgment against him earlier this month – fired for allegedly being rude to civilians on a call he first thought was an active shooter situation – he became the latest in an ever-growing club filled with good men and women.
There’s no membership card, no coin they all carry, but rather the invisible, yet quite tangible, imprint of Sheriff Paul Babeu’s spit-shined shoe on their backside.
Little more than halfway through his second term in office, Babeu has fired more than 80 employees during his time as sheriff – some, no doubt, warranted. But it’s the group of those who got railroaded and sent packing that is the cause for concern.
