After local voters rejected a “Home Rule” spending alternative last year, town officials were faced with making almost $13 million in budget cuts.
But in May of this year, the voters agreed in a special election to let the town spend $15 million above the state limit, eliminating the need for those cuts.
The town will hold another special election on May 17, 2016, to make the same request.
But next year’s election will be different from the one that passed this year by a margin of more than 3-1. This year’s election was an all-mail ballot with only one question, while next year’s ballot will include the state’s measure to increase school funding and will not be all-mail.
