For more than a decade, Peoria Town Center at 8200 W. Peoria Avenue has been falling to pieces. While Albertson’s and Walmart once brought traffic to the 173,000-square-foot space, both stores eventually closed, ultimately making Old Town Peoria a wasteland.
“It’s sat idle and vacant,” said Peoria Director of Economic Development Services Director Scott Whyte. “It’s been deteriorating for quite some time.”
To tackle the problem, the city implemented an Economic Development Implementation Strategy in 2010, which was “adopted to serve as a road map to achieving the city’s stated economic development goals of business retention, business attraction, workforce development, redevelopment opportunities and small business assistance.”
