Republican benefactor and casino king Sheldon Adelson’s purchase of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s largest newspaper, has fueled anxiety about partisan influence tainting coverage of the 2016 presidential race in a crucial western swing state.
Adelson initially kept silent about his $140 million purchase, but eventually confirmed in a statement that his family bought the paper as “both a financial investment as well as an investment in the future of the Las Vegas community.”
However, observers are openly skeptical that the billionaire Adelson’s motives are pure and worried that the Review-Journal will not be able to pursue its news mission freely and fairly.
